To control brigthness, we use light dimmer circuit. This one here works for incandescent lamp, not a fluorescent one and works for both 110V and 220V AC voltage.

It is connected in series with the lamp. Take care that it is not isolated from high voltage, therefore potentiometer should be installed with a plastic knob. Do not try to touch the circuit unless you will be shocked by the electricity. To adjust the brightness of the lamp, the control is done by the potentiometer by turn it right or left. This circuit has no switch, only a fuse for a safety reason. Switch can be added series with the fuse, or you can also insert the circuit between the existing switch and the lamp [source : sprags.com]
